Robert Coppola的《You Too Can Become a Polyglot》第五章有一個想法比較有用:簡化語句。他舉一堆例子如何用基本句式代替比較複雜的句型。這樣做會感覺受限制,但總比講不出來好,當然這應當是暫時的做法,程度高了就不用如此。這個方法可以解決一部分難以對話的困擾。
“The aforementioned linguist Tullio De Mauro, provides us with an enlightening and fun example. These phrases have the same meaning:
1) The bed is in disarray. But I'm tired and seeing it makes me want to sleep the same.
2) In spite of its disorder, the bed inspires me to sleep only to see it because of fatigue.
3) A hypnotic aura emanates anyway from the thalamus towards me only in the act of visual perception catalyzed from the asthenia.
4) The asthenia of mine in the view of the thalamic disarray which is hypnotic by aura or, rather, hypnotically auratic in my psychic introjection of the optical perception.
The purpose of De Mauro is to show that there is no limit to the possibilities of making oneself incomprehensible.”
“The imperative then is: think short, simple and linear sentences. With the progressive enrichment of your lexicon you will be able to add elements to your sentences to make them more concise and precise. It’s better to give a few examples.
We begin with a very simple sentence that we can formulate very early in our learning process:
I am hungry.
Soon we will be able to add very. So we will say
I am very hungry.
Shortly after we will add other commonly used words:
I have a lot of hunger and thirst.
After a few weeks we will know the full conjugation of the verb to have and we will be able to say:
I was very hungry and thirsty.”
“We must get used to "think" in the simplest way possible:
- If it wasn’t so late, I would like to go to the cinema
will become: I would like to go to the cinema but it is too late (avoiding the more difficult it was).
- I never imagined it would be so easy
will become: it's easy, I did not know! (Avoiding never imagined it would).
- I read both newspapers and novels
will become: I read newspapers and novels (avoiding the correlative...both).
It is very useful to learn perfectly the conjugation of the verbs "want", "have" and "be able to" because they allow us to avoid combining other verbs that we know less. Ex .:
- I would go to the restaurant if it was not too expensive
can become: I would like to go to the restaurant but it is expensive (using the infinite go instead of the conditional would go, and avoiding the if clause and the adverb too)”
